Thanks to the Gavin for a fantastic Campus Visit!

On Thursday, April 16th, sixteen friends and new faces to Citizen Schools met at the Gavin Middle School in South Boston to expand the learning day with us. They jumped right into the world of learning that goes on after the school bell rings at our campuses, journeying back to middle school to experience the ways we are educating children and strengthening communities at schools across the country.  Visitors met our students, experienced apprenticeships first hand, and enjoyed seeing our Culture of Achievement in action!

Thanks to everyone who joined us on the 16th and to the team of staff, students, and volunteers at the Gavin who made the visit a huge success!

If you're interested in attending future events like this, please email Kelly Conron or reach her by phone at 617.695.2300 ext. 165

December brought Fall WOW! Season, a celebration of student learning and achievement!

A WOW! is what students produce through their apprenticeships: real-world products or performances that give value back to the community.  Students, family members, political and institutional leaders, experts in their fields, and the Boston public came together last month to witness the exciting results of the semester-long collaboration between students and Citizen Teachers.  What a celebration it was!

WOW! Showcase

On December 8, close to 200 students from 23 apprenticeships in the Science, Technology, Health, Business, Marketing, Advertising, & Environmental sectors put their work and learning on display at the Federal Reserve Bank.  Audience members wandered from room to room where they listened to environmental radio spots produced for NPR, viewed public service announcements like the HUGS 4 THUGS campaign, and enjoyed hands-on health demonstrations...all created by students!

Fall Mock Trials

On December 9, 150 students from 14 legal apprenticeships led by lawyers from 13 of Boston's top firms argued their cases at the Federal Courthouse downtown! Audience members wandered from room to room where they heard arguments, witnessed testimonies, and excitedly awaited verdicts, all prepared and delivered by middle schoolers!

Design & Development WOW!

The Citizen Schools Design and Development Apprenticeship is an urban planning ideas compeition engaging more than 100 youth from middle schools throughout Boston.  Students had been collaborating with volunteer architecture and development professionals to re-envision Boston's built environment and public open spaces, developing plans and models for projects in different city neighborhoods.

On December 15, close to 100 apprentices gathered around architectural models, presentation boards, and banners in the Umass Boston Ballroom to deliver their pitches for the redesign of Dorchester's Columbia Point and Government Center.  In front of parents, community members, UMass officials, and 40 "Celebrity Judges," students stood up and proudly announced their plans. Designs consisted of wading pools and windmills, solar panels and ice-skating rinks, eco-gardens and bike paths, and offices with views. One team even presented their ideas for a kid-friendly redesign of their middle-school classroom.

On February 4, student representatives from each of the 9 teams presented their proposals to Mayor Menino in City Hall!
