National Teaching Fellowship Application Process

We are currently still accepting applications for New Jersey (Newark), New Mexico (Albuquerque and Santa Fe), and Texas (Houston and Austin) openings. We are reviewing applications on a rolling basis and making hiring decisions within a month of submission.

To apply to the Citizen Schools National Teaching Fellowship:

  1. Complete the Online Application

  2. Upload your Cover Letter
Write a strong, descriptive cover letter that highlights your experience, philosophy on education, youth development, and community development as well as how the National Teaching Fellowship fits in with your long-term career goals. Please do not copy and paste your essay answers into your cover letter.

  3. Upload your Resume
Your resume should include contact information, work experience, volunteer experience, extra-curricular activities, and any youth-oriented program experience.

  4. Secure Three Recommendations
Each National Teaching Fellowship applicant must have three letters of recommendation written by three references to support her/his candidacy. These recommendations do not need to be submitted by the application deadline. Click here for the National Teaching Fellowship recommendation form.

If you are applying to the Master's Program, 2 of your 3 letters can be the same as those for the Master's Program.

Note: Applicants for National Teaching Fellow positions in Lowell, Springfield, Worcester, Malden and New Bedford Massachusetts do not need to submit letters of recommendation. They will have the opportunity during the interview process to submit the names and contact information of three references who will be contacted by a Citizen Schools recruiter.

  5. Complete Criminal Background Check
In order to ensure that Citizen Schools is providing a safe environment for the children in our programs and to comply with state and local laws, we conduct criminal background checks on all program staff and volunteers. Specific checks vary by state. For more information on criminal offenses that may prohibit applicants from working with Citizen Schools, please click here.

Telephone Interview
Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in a telephone interview.

On-Campus Interview
Select candidates will be invited to an on-campus interview at the closest Citizen Schools program site. The On-Campus Interview consists of a Campus Visit and an interview with a Citizen Schools Campus Director. It gives candidates a chance to learn about the program on a deeper level by seeing a Citizen Schools program in action. It also provides Citizen Schools the opportunity to see candidates interact with students and program staff. Travel scholarships are available.

On-campus interview elements:

  • Campus Visit: While shadowing a current National Teaching Fellow, you will have to opportunity to observe the Citizen Schools program and learn more about the Fellowship experience. The Campus Visit a significant part of the On-Campus interview process.
  • In-person Interview with a Campus Director: This interview will give you the opportunity to discuss your interest and fit for the National Teaching Fellowship in more detail, and to learn more about Teaching Fellows supervision and support from one of our program site leaders.
