http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jx1L8AZEBSI&feature=player_embedded This past spring, Makeal Surrell, a Citizen Schools student at Elmhurst Community Prep in East Oakland took a blogging apprenticeship with Google. After missing over 20 days his fall semester, Makeal's attendance not only rose, but he was able to create a blog where he reflected on some of his interests, including skateboarding, movies, and rap music videos.
Makeal's experience with Citizen Schools was featured on KQED's blog MindShift. The article is the second installment of the series My Education that explores whether technology in learning has a lasting impact on students in low-income areas, from the student's perspective.
