Staff Members Of The Month: Jossalyn Wilson and Nick Malinowski
CHARLOTTE
Jossalyn Wilson - Deputy Campus Director
"I'm most excited about supporting and working with staff members, families, students, and community members to reach our goals."
- Why did you choose to serve with Citizen Schools? I chose to serve at CS because the model aligns to my personal beliefs about opportunities for students. I believe that experiential learning is powerful. The experiences provided to students through apprenticeships have the ability to truly impact a child's trajectory.
- What part(s) of the CS model do you see adding value to the students, families, and/or school? Definitely the apprenticeships and personal phone calls received from TFs.
- What apprenticeship are you most looking forward to seeing on campus this fall? Gosh, that's really hard to name...I enjoy all the apprenticeships, but I am pumped about returning CTs and what they will be able to accomplish this year.
- What is your favorite Citizen Schools student story? I really believe in journeys, so I'm most inspired by students who didn't see what was possible in the beginning, only to finally stumble upon the endless possibilities that exist.
DURHAM
Nick Malinowski - Program Manager
"We have an incredible team in place, and I can't wait to see the great work they're going to do."
- Why did you choose to serve with Citizen Schools? I chose to serve with Citizen Schools because the most memorable and powerful experiences I've had as a student and an educator have all been outside of a traditional classroom setting. I think all students deserve those experiences.
- What part(s) of the CS model do you see adding value to the students, families, and/or school? Our apprenticeships expose students to options and opportunities they otherwise might not know exist; they prove the possible for our students every day.
- What apprenticeship are you most looking forward to seeing on campus this fall? Secrets of a Millionaire, led by the man, the myth, the legend: Roy Fralin.
- What is your favorite Citizen Schools student story ? During Community Problem Solvers last year, students at Neal proposed building a community space with a school garden. The proposal seemed pretty hypothetical to the students - until Principal Fuga came to observe the apprenticeship and hear the proposal. He gave them some feedback and said "If you can tighten up this plan, we can make this happen." The students' attitudes about the project immediately changed and they saw the impact they could have on their campus.
