November Topic: Using Community to Increase Student Social Emotional Learning
The single most common factor for children who develop resilience is at least one stable and committed relationship with a supportive adult. As we work to educate our youth in the face of the challenges presented by COVID, the vast majority (as much as 70%) of students in historically marginalized communities are working entirely remotely and at risk of losing that connection.
As educators you are being asked to reimagine classroom engagement and focus on the emotional wellbeing of students now more than ever. As community members, you have the opportunity to provide critical support through adult connections and share knowledge from your career experiences. The social emotional benefits of bringing real world career mentors to students include increased engagement, creating meaningful connections with adults and a renewed focus on their future goals.
