Our Story

Since its inception in 1995,

Citizen Schools has been a pioneer in the field of experiential learning. Founded on Martin Luther King Jr. Day by Eric Schwarz and Ned Rimer, Citizen Schools has consistently striven to influence key decision-makers, including governors and district superintendents, with the vision of improving middle school education. Eric Schwarz passionately believed that everyone, not just teachers or parents, should play a role in public education.

Over the past 28 years Citizen Schools has left a lasting imprint on education, engaging over 50,000 students in hands-on, relevant learning; partnering with more than 17,000 volunteers to infuse real-life applications into classrooms; and collaborating with 650 educators nationwide to transform the traditional classroom model. This approach emphasizes creativity, curiosity, and vital skills to equip students for the world of tomorrow.
