Community comes together to celebrate successful apprenticeships
Citizen Schools California ended a successful Fall semester with WOW! events, a culmination of the 10-week-long apprenticeship program. In apprenticeships, volunteers across different industries teach their passion to students once a week for 1.5 hour sessions. Students spend the semester learning a particular skill set or subject matter, all while working towards developing a final project.
The WOW! is an opportunity for students to showcase their final projects and teach back what they have learned over the semester. Volunteer Citizen Teachers, partners, AmeriCorps Teaching Fellows, students, families, and members of the community all attended the WOW!s across the Bay Area. Student ambassadors took command of their apprenticeship booths, and talked to their peers and community members about the highlights of their class.
Some students took the mic and spoke about their apprenticeship to the audience, while others demonstrated yoga poses and challenged attendees to run fitness obstacle courses students had mastered during the semester. Students presented photo books, lego robots, and web designs, all of which they had developed with their classmates during their apprenticeship.
The Spring apprenticeship semester runs from mid-February to May. If you are interested in becoming a Citizen Teacher volunteer, please sign up to learn more here.
