How CSNY is providing Remote Learning support to students, parents, and teachers
After Mayor Bill de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Richard A. Carranza announced all New York City schools will move to a Remote Learning Model until April, CSNY campus teams at Renaissance School of the Arts and Benjamin Franklin Health Science Academy teamed up with school leaders and teachers on the distribution of computer devices to students and ensuring families are equipped with the necessary knowledge to operate academic sites and gain access to learning materials.
Ricky Thompson, a second year Teaching Fellow at Benjamin Franklin Health Science has been working with Mr. Romain, a very diligent parent who’s passionate about preserving his daughter’s education. During the call, Ricky guided Mr. Romain through creating a Google email address and NYC student account for his daughter, connecting him to Ms. Perez, teacher at Benjamin Franklin Health Science Academy to assist with setting up his parent square account. Melesa Hall, first year Teaching Fellow at Benjamin Franklin Health Science Academy shared, “parents are delighted about the amount of support we are providing during this time of uncertainty. It lets us know we have built good trust and reliability.”
Now that schools are closing out week two of Remote Learning, CSNY campus teams are showing new levels of service and student support! Teaching Fellows are offering students virtual academic support through 1:1 online tutoring, assistance with assignments provided by first shift teachers, and virtual clubs like Step, Art, Spelling Bee, Chess, GoIT, and PowerPlay. CSNY also continues to deliver Google Coding and our writing academy through live virtual sessions with volunteers.
Virtual group sizes range from four to six students per session. Norman Martin, first year Teaching Fellow at Renaissance School of the Arts hosts a virtual group session with Francisco Hernandez, and other students. The session included homework and tutoring support and discussions around staying safe and healthy.
