Solar Cars Citizen Teacher Bruce Hecht Takes Apprentices on a Different Route
Being a Citizen Teacher allows you to be inventive. Some Citizen Teachers teach apprenticeships using a pre-written curriculum, but that doesn’t mean they can’t go “off-track” a little and incorporate their own creative ideas. Massachusetts Citizen Teacher and electrical engineer from Analog Devices, Bruce Hecht switched up an activity in his Solar Cars curriculum that introduced Salemwood Middle School students to the idea of data collection with student’s favorite foods. Instead, Bruce took the opportunity to get to know about his apprentices’ aspirations and collected data on their future goals and careers. The Solar Cars apprentices created affinity diagrams to showcase the data before applying the same concept to collecting data on the speed of their cars.
