Citizen Schools Helps Chelsea Students with Donated Backpacks

Students from Chelsea public schools, including those that participate in Citizen Schools’ Expanded Learning Time, will kick off the new school year with 900 donated backpacks full of pencils, notebooks, rulers, and more. Citizen Schools, an organization that empowers public middle schools in low-income communities with longer learning days, received the backpacks filled with supplies as a donation from Kronos Incorporated, Mass.-based global leader in workforce management solutions.

Super-volunteer Anne Bowie recognized by Citizen Schools

Dorchester’s Anne Bowie was recognized for her volunteer work by Citizens Schools at their annual awards event on June 14. Bowie is the public service manager at WilmerHale, a law firm that hosted 14 seventh and eighth graders from the Browne Middle School in Chelsea for apprenticeships. Each student was paired with their own lawyer, who would teach the students the different terms and prepare them for the mock trial they would have at the end of the 10-week program.

I decided to become an AmeriCorps Teaching Fellow because I wanted to impact students by providing them with the tools that they need to succeed academically. During my primary education, I did not have the privilege of having a person to ensure that I was obtaining all the skills that I needed to flourish in my academics. I come from a family where my parents worked long hours, are not articulate English speakers, and therefore, was unable to support me with my academics.
