Capital One Coding Academy: Unlocking One's Potential

In the United States, there has been growing attention drawn to the staggering diversity gap that exists in the technology industry— as of 2018, less than 20% of the the tech workforce identifies as Black or Latino. While many agree that education is key to combating this trend, in 2016, only 15% of computer science degrees awarded in the United States were to students identifying as Black or Latino. Furthermore, less than 40% of K-12 schools in the United States offer computer programming courses. The continual lack of computer programming courses to children at an early age only serves to further the underrepresentation of people of color in the technology industry.

3rd Annual Get CycED for Citizen Schools

On the morning of Saturday, March 30th, in an effort to fight the growing opportunity gap in New York, a group of our dedicated supporters came together to attend a high-energy spin class at SWERVE Fitness. A huge shout-out to our 8 teams that were geared up for a morning of calorie-burning, endorphins-boosting fun. Thanks to their passionate efforts, we were able to raise $46,597!

'Cracking The Case' with PwC

In our ‘Crack the Case” apprenticeship, students learn to become insightful marketers through careful research and analysis. Last fall, students at Isaac Newton Middle School in New York, played the role of business consultant to Ben and Jerry’s, working to determine the best choice for their newest flavor.

Led by partners and staff at PwC, the global professional services firm, students research the popularity and profitability of different flavors, and ultimately worked to build a case for their ice cream flavor - and why it should be chosen.

Over 100 employees from AB have taught apprenticeships since 2010. Through this strong partnership, our students have had the incredible opportunity to forge bonds with a team of caring adults, who we hope, will help inspire them to discover and achieve their future goals.

[How I Work] Cultivating the people who close opportunity gaps for kids

National education nonprofit Citizen Schools is committed to helping all children discover and achieve their dreams. Their work equipping young people with the skills, access, and beliefs to succeed in college and career inspired Michelle Carter to make the leap to Boston, relocating from her North Carolina hometown, and help re-imagine the learning day in support of students across the country. Today, Carter serves as a Talent Business Partner and has supported staff in all six of the organization’s service regions.

Teach Us All: Documentary Screening with Viacom

On September 20, Citizen Schools New York held a screening of Teach Us All, a documentary film directed by Sonia Lowman. The documentary details the history of school segregation and educational inequality, and how these issues are still impacting schools in the United States. Much like the courageous efforts of the Little Rock Nine, the film highlights how young people are still at the forefront of disrupting educational inequities.

Celebrating Students: WOW! Showcase Events

Each year, we excitedly look forward to WOW! student showcases, which celebrate the culmination of our students’ hard work throughout their apprenticeships. At these events, students get to show off all that they have accomplished and families, friends, and volunteers get to enjoy interactive presentations and other festive activities. Every campus in New York had a chance to shine with their very own campus celebration--complete with a pun-inspired theme.

NYC Mayoral Service Awards

At Citizen Schools, we envision a world in which schools, companies and families partner to provide students with a set of real-world learning experiences that put them on a path to college and career success. Here at CSNY, we are lucky to have volunteers representing so many different fields each semester. From an introduction to neuroscience with Columbia University, to a public speaking master class with a Googler, we couldn’t do what we do without our amazing CTs! CSNY recognizes the hard work and dedicated service of our volunteers through the NYC Mayoral Service Awards.

Utilizing Blended Learning to Close Opportunity and Achievement Gaps: Lessons from Citizen Schools Digital Courseware Pilot

In the 2016-17 school year, Citizen Schools completed the second year of our initiative to pilot and evaluate digital courseware across our national network to learn more about how best to integrate technology into Expanded Learning Time (ELT) for middle school students.

Gina Amico and David Urieta, are AmeriCorps Alums and currently completing a Masters of Science through the IPSL International Development and Service (MS-IDS) program. Gina is nearing her graduation and studied / served abroad in Siena, Italy and Guayaquil, Ecuador. David is preparing for his first semester abroad in Medellin, Colombia.

December 2017 WOW! Week Recap

Here at Citizen Schools New York, December is when our students get to showcase what they have learned in their 10-week apprenticeships, while their volunteer Citizen Teachers get to say WOW! At our semi-annual Google MegaWOW!, 75 students across our four schools were able to showcase their final products to more than 20 Citizen Teachers, 30 staff members, 25 guest and other special guests.

Reflections from a First-Year Teaching Fellow

Cameron Tulloch joined Citizen Schools this past fall as a first-year Teaching Fellow. Originally from Melville, New York, Cameron enjoys writing and recording his own music and is passionate about the nonprofit industry and helping others. Over the past semester, Cameron has proven that he is not only committed to supporting students through his work with Citizen Schools, but that he is dedicated to learning himself, as he is also a full-time student at St. John’s University in Queens. As part of his studies, Cameron, was asked to record reflections on his experiences as a new teacher. One of Citizen Schools New York's most impactful and valued partnerships to-date is with a longstanding nonprofit partner: Creative Art Works (CAW). CAW is a 31-year-old nonprofit that empowers NYC young people through the visual and multimedia arts. A Citizen Schools collaborator and partner since 2012, CAW has led nearly 40 apprenticeships covering innovative topics such as Cartooning and Anatomy, Urban Design, Stop-Motion Animation, and Sneaker Branding.
