Service Year Alliance Launches Service+Tech to Increase Underrepresented Groups in Technology

Through this program, service year participants will have the opportunity to develop essential technology skills, discover pathways into tech careers, and leverage technology to solve society’s most pressing challenges. As part of the new Service+Tech network, service year participants will have access to free, technology-focused resources and activities, including coding training opportunities, local civic tech hackathons, speaker series events, and tech career resources.

Jacky Bailey is a volunteer Citizen Teacher who joined Citizen Schools, after moving to the Bay Area from Australia, because she missed working with students and wanted to get to know her new community. When Bailey decided to teach an apprenticeship with Citizen Schools for the second time, she wanted to ensure her students could enact and advocate for change in the real world - and not just theoretically in the classroom.

Brenda Pulgarin: From Student to Alumni Leadership Council Champion

Brenda Pulgarin was a  2018 summer intern at the Citizen Schools headquarters in Boston, serving on the External Engagement team. Her role consisted of analyzing volunteer survey responses and updating contact records in our database. Brenda attended the Edwards Middle School and is now a sophomore at the John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics and Science.

Teach Us All: Documentary Screening with Viacom

On September 20, Citizen Schools New York held a screening of Teach Us All, a documentary film directed by Sonia Lowman. The documentary details the history of school segregation and educational inequality, and how these issues are still impacting schools in the United States. Much like the courageous efforts of the Little Rock Nine, the film highlights how young people are still at the forefront of disrupting educational inequities.
