MIT Pencil Code

Citizen Teacher: Andy & Arnav

Teaching Fellow: Emily

We’ve had to adapt a lot in this apprenticeship. On campus, Andy joined our class virtually and explained programming basics and life at Google. He guided us through scenarios where one student played as the computer, and other students gave them commands. Virtually, Andy was able to support us until he moved out of the bay. Luckily Arnav, who’s currently a sophomore in High School, also volunteered to help guide us virtually. We practiced coding with hour of code challenges on Code.org, including creating a Flappy Bird game, and a Dance Party.

Students: Jeremy, Jazmin, Estefanny, Nefi, Allisson

The Pencil Code Apprenticeship exposed students to web-based software that enables them to create images using a Pencil Code Strategy. This is vital because all tech companies use coding strategies to develop their products. It gives students the chance to dream of a tech career by introducing them to one of the most used coding strategy in the industry. Below is an example of what students were working on in the Pencil Code Apprenticeship:
